Project summary

Karst phenomena, or karst formations, are characteristic for most of the areas in the Istrian County and consequently for Croatia and Slovenia and Italy. The co-financing of this project created adequate protection of karst on the border area of the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Slovenia. The implementation of this project provided cross-border co-operation of institutions responsible for the research and monitoring of karst as well as its improvement. The greatest added value of this project was the establishment of a joint supervision of the karst area, which extends across the territory of both countries. Outputs of the project were: cross-border cooperation during the implementation of the project activities of the institutions at a national and regional level in Slovenia and Croatia; upgraded cadastre of speleological objects in Istria, with the possibility of on-line overview; cave-management plan; renovation and modification of an old school in Vodice into a “Speleo house”, 6 km from the Slovenian border; 12 most endangered caves cleaned; International network of speleological institutions, alliances, clubs and societies with the headquarters based in the “Speleo house”; 2 International schools of karst science in Postojna; lessons, seminars and workshops for different target groups; 30 minute-long educational documentary about the karst; promotional material; web site of the project.
