The European Commission has launched two public consultations that are particularly relevant for border regions and their specific challenges in the areas of the labour market, labour mobility, and social rights. We invite all relevant stakeholders in border areas to actively participate and contribute their views and experiences.

1. Skills Portability Initiative

The Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (DG EMPL) is collecting views as part of an initiative aimed at improving the recognition and portability of skills and competences among Member States, particularly in cross-border contexts.
Deadline for submitting contributions: 27 February 2026

2. Fair labour mobility package

The second consultation focuses on measures to ensure fair and effective labour mobility within the EU, including improved enforcement, institutional cooperation, and the protection of mobile workers’ rights.
Deadline for submitting contributions: 2 February 2026 (the shorter deadline makes timely participation especially important)

Both initiatives explicitly highlight border regions and their specific characteristics. Broad stakeholder participation will help gather high-quality evidence and raise awareness of the real needs of border areas, which may influence further action by the European Commission.

Additional background materials are available in the annex:

  • information on the Skills Portability Initiative,

  • materials on the revision of the European Labour Authority (ELA),

  • the ESSPASS proposal.

You are kindly invited to participate!
