Project summary

Specific cross-borders objectives of the project were: the establishment of a common cross-border platform for a sustainable long-term development of waste management sector in cross-border region; use of the best international practice for the development of an efficient system for the separate collection of waste; strengthening of socially vulnerable groups – the unemployed – by creating new „green“ jobs in the waste management sector, and by their re-inclusion in the labor market; systematic approach to education and increase awareness of public and private sector, about the significance of their contribution to the environmental protection. Added value of the project was seen in creation of the first cross-border institutional waste management system, which included setting up and making the reuse center in Velenje functional, as well as building a Separate collection facility Mraclinska Dubrava in Velika Gorica. Outputs of the project were: 2 studies on the analyses of amount and composition of waste; developed Study of the sustainable waste management system with strategic development plan for the City of Velika Gorica and City of Velenje; developed methodology and server software for the exchange of information on the collected waste and re-use items; separate waste collection facility Mraclinska Dubrava in Velika Gorica built; renovated, equipped and functional Reuse center Velenje in Velenje; bought an electric cargo vehicle for the Reuse center Velenje; common public communication strategy brochure developed for the communication of public authorities with public on the Program’s area; bilingual printed and educational multimedia and informational materials developed (leaflets, brochures, posters, textile bags, flags, calendars, educational comics, video presentations, publishing of announcements in media); bought a server computer for the School center Velenje; project web-page developed.
