Project summary

With this project we wanted to establish a cross-border integrated tourist product, a common market, and to attach on the existing bike paths in Austria Mura-Drava and to the involved hinterland regions, setting up a cross-border tourist destination on the tourist map, which will be recognized as a destination for active rest and sustainable tourism in the area of ​​cross-border region of partner organizations. The specific objective of the project was the establishment of an attractive cross-border tourist destination along the Mura and Drava river. This project enabled the continuation of “Murradweg” and “Drauradweg” and took advantage of (market) potential of existing trails, which were richer in the past. The project also fills a void that connects the river bike trails to the bike trails across Danube river. The resultant transverse bike trail is interesting in the wider European (and global) areas, and can be included on the list of bike trails in Europe that can offer exciting multi-day tourist product. This bicycle route became a trademark (“branding”), which will attract riders who like long tours. At the same time, the bike trail has become “the backbone”, which is interesting for a team of “hub” cyclists; located in one area, using daily, round tours. By doing so, the project has developed tourism products, which are primarily related to cycling (e.g. connection with rafting, riding, cultural tourism, etc.), but can also be used independently. The implementation of the project has created a large documented base of natural and cultural attractions of the (project) area, which can be used for various other purposes.
